how to make a deliciously sweet valentines treat!

friends, we’re less than a month out from valentine’s day. i absolutely love valentine’s season and all things red and pink! it feels like this little window into a brighter and bolder time of year with colors that help lift our spirits…and trust me when i say that i feel like anything that helps us lift our moods this time of year is beyond welcomed.

besides all the pink and red, what else can lift your spirits than a twist on the super delicious classic rice krispie treat?! (just my opinion, but the rice krispie treat is such an underrated dessert.) this classic is so easy to make and is a super fun one to make with the kids too. it does take a couple of extra steps than what you might be used to with a classic rice krispie treat recipe, but they’re still super easy!

let’s start with the ingredient list + the extras you’ll need!

heart sprinkle valentine’s treats
ingredients:
6 c. crispy rice cereal
40 large marshmallows
2 T. butter
cooking spray
1/2 c. confectioners sugar
1 T. cream or whole milk
1/2 t. vanilla
red food coloring
valentine sprinkles (here’s a super cool one from michaels!)
heart-shaped cookie cutter (here’s a great one from michaels!)
13″ x 9″ pan

here are our steps to some super sweet treats:

  1. heat a large stockpot over medium heat + melt the 2 T. butter.
  2. once melted, add in the marshmallows. stir slowly with a spatula sprayed with cooking spray.
  3. when marshmallows are melted, add in the crispy rice cereal + combine.
  4. spray a 13″ x 9″ pan with cooking spray and spread crispy rice mixture into pan. spread out evenly.
  5. let pan cool completely (~1 hour).
  6. when cool, flip pan of marshmallow treats over on to a cutting board. grab your heart-shaped cookie cutter and start cutting out heart-shaped treats!
  7. to prep your icing, mix 1/2 c. confectioners sugar, 1 T. cream, 1/2 t. vanilla, and one drop of red food coloring. (the icing will be pretty liquidy!)
  8. lay a heart-shaped treat on a plate, and slowly pour the icing over the one side of the heart. finish off with a generous sprinkle of sprinkles!
  9. place heart marshmallow bars in the freezer for 1-2 hours to allow the icing to set.
  10. enjoy your treats!

happy valentine’s day, my friends!
