how to put those devices down and unplug

if you know, you know. i’m not sure there isn’t a single one of us that could use to spend a little less time on the devices and a little more time doing something that, well, isn’t on a device. picking up an actual physical book. doing a creative project. building a LEGO set. cooking in the kitchen (from an actual cookbook!) talking a walk outside. i know for our family, we are all guilty of needing to do a little less device and a little more of this…but life makes it tough. so, going cold turkey isn’t realistic, but maybe taking a couple of hours on a single day device-free might be an option?!

last week, i discovered something that my state is doing on saturday, july 12, 2025. say hello to unplug illinois day. totally by coincidence, my boys + i also scheduled our LEGO make + take day at 35:35 makers collective! pretty amazing timing, right?

if our super fun event isn’t accessible for you this weekend, there are so many other ideas of ways to get your kids and your family having some device-free fun!

LEGO free-building at home: if you have kids who love LEGO, this is the absolutely perfect way to put devices down and build. have a family build challenge by setting a timer and seeing who can build the largest LEGO structure in a set amount of time. or, scope out deals on LEGO sets and grab a new one for the whole family to build together. there are so many benefits of LEGO time for kids and adults alike!

read! grab books, magazines, whatever you can think of, just read! put the devices in a separate room, snuggle up + read.

get outside: get the kids some sidewalk chalk, go for a walk together, ride your bikes, or you could even do an outdoor craft like my squirt gun painted canvas project!

get creative + have some fun in the kitchen: whether you like cooking or baking, there are so many cool things you can make in the kitchen! if you’re not a family with cookbooks, a great idea is to head to your local library to discover new cookbooks and check them out to test drive recipes in your kitchen! not only can you get creative, but this is a way to introduce new foods, new flavors, and new processes to your family!

i can’t wait to see what you do with your unplugged activities! enjoy the time without the devices with your family + friends and learn, try, and experience something new!
