the life of a doughgirl

seriously, with my swiftie obsession? i just couldn’t pass up that headline.

i realize that i am about six years late to jump on this trend (forgive me, when everyone was baking sourdough during the pandemic, i was trying to get a 1st grader through virtual schooling and a newly minted middle schooler comfortable with canvas and google classroom) but i’m here now. that’s what matters, right?

shortly before my birthday, i happened to mention in passing to my husband that i was thinking about trying to make sourdough bread. his initial reaction: “ohhhh boy.” what i didn’t even consider at the time? that that sweet man – and my two boys – would latch on to my flippant comment and encourage me to go all-in on this adventure with the greatest birthday gift ever.

my starter has started. correction: my first starter started. and then we had to go out of town for the weekend, and i forgot to take my starter baby. so when we got back, i started over.

say hello to marjorie the starter. named after my grandmother who would bake a lot, although i don’t think she ever baked bread. i am proud to say that my starter baby #2 is doing very well, she’s growing each time she’s fed, and loves living in my bathroom during the day where it’s always warm.

i wish i could recommend the kit the boys got me…i’m fairly certain it came from amazon, but not exactly sure. i have loved using my tried-and-true king arthur flour to feed marjorie (this is the only flour i use for anything!) and, now we just keep feeding and waiting and hopefully i can maybe venture into making my first loaf next week!

do you do sourdough? what are your best tips? best recipes?
